It’s Never Too Late to…Rewrite Your Motivation Story

Have you ever told yourself, “I just don’t feel motivated”? Or perhaps, “I’m just not the kind of person who can stick to things”?

We’ve all been there.

I know I certainly have!

For so many of us, motivation feels like this elusive force that appears out of nowhere, lifting us up and pushing us forward. But when it vanishes? We stop, stall, and fall back into old patterns. And before we know it, we’re stuck in the same cycle, wondering why motivation never seems to stick around.

But what if I told you that everything you think you know about motivation is wrong?

What if motivation isn’t something that happens to you, but something you create?

And more importantly—what if it’s never too late to rewrite your motivation story?

The Truth About Motivation

Most people believe motivation is like a lightning bolt—you either get struck by it, or you don’t. But in reality, motivation works more like a fire: it needs fuel, oxygen, and consistent tending to keep burning.

If you’ve ever felt like you “just aren’t a motivated person,” it’s not because you’re lacking something magical. It’s likely because you’ve been relying on the wrong approach: waiting instead of creating.

Motivation isn’t a feeling—it’s a habit. And the best part? Habits can be changed.

How to Rewrite Your Motivation Story

If you’re ready to stop waiting and start generating motivation, here’s how to flip the script:

1. Stop Relying on Willpower—Start Relying on Action

Waiting to “feel” motivated before you start something is like waiting for a sunny day before you leave the house. You’ll never get anywhere.

Instead, flip the process: action creates motivation, not the other way around.

  • If you don’t feel like working out? Do five minutes.

  • If you don’t feel like writing? Write one sentence.

  • If you don’t feel like reaching out to that connection? Send a quick message.

Once you start, the motivation follows. Every single time.

2. Change the Story You’re Telling Yourself

Your internal dialogue matters. If you keep telling yourself, “I never stick to anything,” or “I always lose motivation,”guess what? Your brain will believe it.

Instead, rewrite the script:
💡 “I am learning to be consistent.”
💡 “I find new ways to stay motivated every day.”
💡 “I am becoming the kind of person who follows through.”

Words shape reality. Make sure the ones you’re using work for you, not against you.

3. Find Your ‘Why’—Then Keep It Front and Centre

Motivation dies quickly when the goal is vague. If you don’t have a strong reason behind your actions, it’s easy to give up.

So ask yourself: Why does this matter to me?

  • Do you want to improve your health so you have more energy to enjoy life?

  • Do you want to grow your business so you can create more freedom for yourself?

  • Do you want to learn a new skill because it excites you and challenges you?

Write your why down. Stick it somewhere visible. Make it impossible to ignore.

4. Look at What Naturally Motivates You

Motivation doesn’t have to feel like a struggle. In fact, there are already things in your life that you naturally feel motivated to do.

Think about the activities or tasks that don’t feel like a chore—the ones you approach with excitement, the ones you always seem to find energy for.

Now ask yourself: What is it about these activities that keeps me motivated?

  • Is it because they align with your values or passions?

  • Is it because they challenge you in a way that excites you?

  • Is it because they involve a sense of community, connection, or creativity?

Look for the common themes in the things that naturally drive you. What do they have in common?

Now, take that insight and apply it to the areas where you’ve struggled to stay motivated in the past.

For example:
If you love learning new things, could you turn a mundane task into a challenge or experiment?
If accountability keeps you on track, could you find a mentor, a coach, or a community to support you?
If you thrive on variety, could you introduce more flexibility into your routine?

Rather than forcing motivation in a way that doesn’t work for you, use what already does—and build on that.

5. Make Motivation a Daily Practice, Not a One-Time Event

Motivation isn’t something you “find” once and keep forever—it’s something you build, moment by moment.

  • Surround yourself with inspiration (books, podcasts, people who lift you up).

  • Celebrate progress, not just the big wins.

  • Track your efforts—it’s easier to stay motivated when you see how far you’ve come.

Think of motivation like brushing your teeth—you don’t just do it once and expect lifelong results. You commit to it, daily.

It’s Never Too Late to Start Again

If you’ve been telling yourself that you’re just not a motivated person, that you always give up, or that you’ll never change—stop. That story isn’t serving you.

You have the power to rewrite it. You have the power to become a motivated person. And the best part?

It’s never too late to start.
